Kitchen Overlooking the Long Island Sound
This grand-scale Ken Kelly kitchen was central to the design and restoration of a 100+ year-old home in Huntington Bay, Long Island, NY. The original kitchen was in a small interior room. Our clients, who frequently entertain and cook sumptuous meals, wanted to open the walls to expand the size of the kitchen and take advantage of the water views to the Long Island sound. They restructured several bearing walls to combine five existing rooms and an old pantry into this flowing chef’s kitchen that features two full-size 30” Sub-zero refrigerators and one full-size 24” freezer. They added an 8 burner Blue Star professional range top, Thermador double wall ovens with side-hinge openings, a Wolf microwave, and a Wolf steam oven. The coffee bar features a Miele coffee maker recessed into the wall. We went with shorter half wall pantries to see the water view as soon as you enter the kitchen. These half walls also form the back side of the kitchen banquette. The lower part of those pantries has extra deep roll outs that slide under the banquette bench seating. The front of the banquette benches include storage drawers underneath the nook as well. One of the design challenges was to work around the existing chimney in the center of the space behind the bar. We were able to hide the chimney between the bar and the refrigerator/freezer wall. The cabinetry detailing is stunning. The liquor cabinet front was designed to match the existing leaded-glass windows in the original home. This cabinet door opens on an electric lift mechanism. Below the open liquor shelves is a Sub-zero wine cooler and additional storage. On the front side of the bar, there is a Sub-Zero ice maker, a bar sink, and Sub-Zero refrigerator drawers. The upper bar has a custom-made walnut counter that wraps around through the top of the banquette seating area that faces the beach. This kitchen has wood floors, a V-groove wood ceiling, and two Galley sink workstations with drying docks on the right and left. The counter is Vermont Danby marble. The design of this kitchen is anchored by a magnificent focal point over the Blue Star range. If you look closely, we designed a custom vent hood wrapped in marble to match the counters in order to maintain an unobstructed water view.
